The short answer
Yes, RuneScape: Dragonwilds supports crossplay: players on different platforms can share the same world, and worlds can hold up to four players. Two storefronts state cross-platform capability as a label on the product page, and Jagex's own launch material lists crossplay as new in the 1.0 build.
Crossplay is not cross-progression. Nothing in the material we read says your character, skills or inventory follow you between platforms. The community sources are explicit that they do not.
What each source actually says
This page exists because crossplay is the clearest example on this site of a fact that is true, widely repeated, and not fully documented by any single first-party page. So the sources are listed by class instead of being merged.
| Claim | Original wording | Source class | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crossplay exists | Nintendo store product tags: Cross-platform play, Online co-op | First-party (store) | 2026-09-17 |
| Crossplay exists | Xbox store labels: Xbox cross-platform multiplayer, Xbox cross-platform co-op | First-party (store) | 2026-09-17 |
| Crossplay is new in 1.0 and can be toggled per hosting | Jagex's launch material, as recorded by the homepage's reconciliation | First-party, inherited from the homepage's own sourcing | 2026-09-17 |
| Maximum group size is four | PlayStation: "supports up to 4 online players with PS Plus" · Nintendo: Online (1-4) with the footnote "Up to 4 players for Online Play" · Xbox: Online co-op (2-4) | First-party (store) | 2026-09-17 |
| A world's crossplay setting is chosen by the host each time the world is hosted, including on dedicated servers | A third-party crossplay guide, updated 15 September 2026, describing the host flow and the world-browser invite code | Secondary | 2026-09-17 |
| Crossplay works but cross-progression does not | A 1.0-day creator transcript: crossplay yes; cross-progression no; a new platform means a new character | Community | 2026-09-17 |
| You can bring a character from one platform into a world hosted on another, to move items | A second creator transcript describing a Steam character entering an Xbox-hosted world | Community | 2026-09-17 |
How you actually switch it on
The operational detail comes from a third-party guide rather than from Jagex, so treat it as a description of the flow rather than as documentation:
- Worlds are joined through an in-game world browser. A friend shares an invite code and you enter it to join.
- Crossplay is a per-hosting choice, not an account-wide setting: the person hosting picks whether that session is crossplay.
- Dedicated servers expose the same choice, which matters if you want a world that stays up without a host being online.
We print this as secondary. It is consistent with the storefront labels and with Jagex's launch material, but it is not Jagex's own wording, so it is graded down rather than presented as first-party.
Crossplay versus cross-progression — the part people get wrong
These are two different features and only one of them is in the game:
| Crossplay | Cross-progression | |
|---|---|---|
| What it means | Players on different platforms share one world | Your character, skills and inventory follow you between platforms |
| Status | Supported — stated by Nintendo and Xbox store labels, and by the launch material cited on the homepage | Not supported — no source we read states it, and community sources state the opposite |
| Source class | First-party (store) | Community, plus the absence of any first-party statement |
Two community sources read on 2026-09-17 state that there is no traditional cross-save or cross-progression, and that starting on a new platform means starting a new character at level 1. One of them also describes a workaround the game's design allows: because crossplay puts everyone in the same world, a character from one platform can be walked into a world hosted on another and used to move materials. That is a consequence of crossplay, not cross-progression, and we describe it as the community describes it.
Troubleshooting: when a crossplay friend cannot join
Everything in this subsection is community-sourced and is presented as a checklist rather than as an official fix list. The guide we read, updated on launch day, lists the usual causes: the host did not enable crossplay for that session; the invite code was mistyped or expired; the guest has not linked the account the world expects; platform-side online subscriptions are missing (PS Plus on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch Online on Switch 2, a Game Pass tier on Xbox); or one side is on a version that has not been updated. It also notes that a dedicated server has its own crossplay toggle that must be set independently of any player-hosted session.
What this page does not claim
We do not print a full pairing matrix — a grid saying every platform can join every other platform — because no first-party source publishes one. Nintendo states cross-platform play; Xbox states Xbox cross-platform multiplayer and cross-platform co-op; Steam and the PlayStation Store state no cross-platform label at all on the listing bodies read this round. Where a first-party page is silent we mark it silent, and we do not fill the grid in from a third-party guide.
We also do not state that cross-progression is coming, or that it was ever planned. No source we read says either.
